When the Phone Gets Your Attention

July 22, 2026

Parents hear a lot about their child's screen time. But sometimes, the more useful conversation is about adult screen time. Not as a judgment but as an opportunity.

You might say: "Most of us are on our phones more than we mean to be. Are there moments when your child seems to be asking for more of your attention?"

That question can open the door without shame. Then suggest one small experiment: For the next week, choose one phone-free pocket of time - the first few minutes after pickup, part of dinner, bedtime, or a short stretch of play. Even five minutes of full attention can help a child feel seen and connected.

And when the phone has to come out, encourage parents to narrate it: "I'm sending one message, then I'm putting it away."

Children don't need perfect phone habits from adults. They benefit from predictable moments when connection comes first.
