The Power of Silliness

January 14, 2026

Medicine may be a serious business, but a little silliness can model flexibility, critical thinking and problem solving for your patients. So brush up on those improv skills and try your hand at a few silly moments in your next visit.

Here are a few ideas:

  1. Make a silly mistake, like using your otoscope to examine a patient's feet!
  2. Create a silly scenario, like asking who is bigger, an elephant or a mouse.
  3. Tell a funny story to a patient, like something you or your friends did when you were their age (hint, ask a family member if you can't remember!).
