Setting Appropriate Developmental Expectations

May 21, 2025

In case you missed it, at our last Keystones of Development Speaker Series, Rebecca Parlakian, Senior Director of Programs at ZERO TO THREE, highlighted a common challenge: the "expectations gaps." Many parents expect more from their toddlers than their developmental stage can support - especially when it comes to impulse control, emotional regulation, and decision-making.

As providers, we can bridge this gap by setting realistic expectations during visits. Try saying:

  • "Your toddler's brain is still developing - especially the parts that help them control emotions and behavior,"
  • "It's not about being 'bad' - it's about being not yet ready."

This shift helps parents approach tough moments with more patience and empathy, instead of frustration.

How do you explain developmental milestones to help parents reframe challenging behavior?
