Sometimes the data isn't good news. Research has shown that kids on average have a 25-50% loss in math over the summer. That's equal to almost 2 or more months of learning in school. Loss of skills is also seen in reading, writing, spelling and vocabulary.
So, what to suggest to parents this summer?
Summer fun! Camps, parks, sports, and even board games build vital thinking skills that have been shown to improve academic performance. And while reading is key, families can mix fun books with challenging ones to boost vocabulary. Plus, suggest using long car rides or down time to sneak in math with apps or puzzles. Most importantly, encourage parents to engage in conversations that spark curiosity and critical thinking. Summer is for learning in exciting and less conventional ways!
