Witnessing a child hit in the office isn't an easy moment. Especially for parents who feel pressure in front of you.
When you see a child out of control, try this:
- Talk directly to the child and name how you think they are feeling - for example, frustrated, tired, or scared.
- Suggest something else they can do when they feel that way - for example, "if you feel scared, you can sit on mommy's lap or you can ask for a hug."
- Remind the caregiver that hitting is about impulse control at these young ages, and that they should provide support and alternative communication tools for toddlers instead of punishments.
