Physical Development

July 7, 2022

Normal Development:

Your baby can see 8-12 inches away. By about 1 month your baby can follow a moving light with his eyes for a couple of seconds. By about 6 weeks his eyes should move together most of the time and follow objects from one side to the other. Your baby likes to look at bright lights and shapes.

Your baby can lift and turn his head when lying on his back by 2 months and watch a moving face by the time they are 2-3 months.  His digestive system is still developing (0-3 months.)

What You Can Do:

Play with light and shadows, place your baby in front of a window. He will like to look at the shadows and light. Let your baby look at human faces, black and white pictures, and toys. Give your baby plenty of tummy time—put your baby on his stomach so he can practice lifting up his head.

Our Advice:

It’s normal if your baby’s eyes seem to cross or don’t move together. His eye muscles will strengthen in the first 3 months of life. Check with your pediatrician if you are worried. Remember to give your baby tummy time. Remember that all babies grow and develop at their own speed and try not to compare your baby (or yourself) to others.
