Fine Motor Development Between Ages 2 and 3

Normal Development:

• Makes straight lines and curves with pen or crayon

• Turning moving handles, such as doorknobs

• Holds pencil in writing position

• Screws and unscrews jars and lids

• Turns pages one at a time

What You Can Do:

• Let your child scribble with crayons

• Bead play

• Lacing games

• Ring toss

• Child scissors and art projects

Our Advice:

• Try to make your house safe for your child to explore by baby/child proofing

• Try to allow your child to practice drawing and writing—even when it’s messy

• Play with beads or small toys over a blanket or piece of newspaper (something you can use to catch the pieces)

Try not to compare yourself to other parents, or your child to other children. Some children do things earlier than others
